Prof. Dr. İdris Bostan, Faculty of Letters, İstanbul University

“Ottoman Mediterranean:

Boundaries, Phenomena, and Approaches”

 

 

Prof. Dr. Idris Bostan of Istanbul University Faculty of Letters is the Head of the Center for Mediterranean Studies and a consultant of the Undersecretariat for Maritime Affairs. He has published surveys on maritime policies, trade and technology of the Ottoman Empire.

Some of his works are Osmanli Bahriye Teskilati: XVII. Yüzyilda Tersane-i Amire (Ottoman Navy Organization: The Arsenal in the 17th Century, Ankara 2003), Haritalar ve Coğrafya Eserlerine Göre Ege Denizi ve Ege Adaları (Aegean Sea and Islands, Ankara 2003), The 1565 Ottoman Malta Campaign Register (Malta 1998 together with A. Cassola and T. Sheben), Kurekli ve Yelkenli Osmanli Gemileri (Ottoman Rowing Boats and Sailboats, Istanbul 2005), Osmanlilar ve Deniz (Ottomans and the Sea, Istanbul 2007), and Adriyatik'te Korsanlik: Osmanlilar, Uskoklar, Venedikliler (1575-1620) (Piracy in the Adriatic: The Ottomans, Uskoks and Venetians, Istanbul, 2009).

He teaches on the subjects of Ottoman naval history, the administrative structure of Ottoman maritime affairs, the history of naval trade, Southern policy of the Ottoman Empire and its presence in North Africa, and the Black Sea trade.
